Massachusetts Chess Association – Board Meeting Minutes – 6/27/99

The MACA board held its first meeting of Fiscal Year, 2000 on Sunday, June 27, 1999 from at the home of Steven Frymer. In attendance: Stephen Dann, president, Steven Frymer, treasurer, Walter Driscoll, Peter Lee, Peter Sherwood, Valery Frenklakh, and Homer Franck.

The meeting was called to order at 1:30pm.

The meeting was opened with a lengthy speech by Steven Dann stressing the need for coordination and consensus among board members and the need for sustained efforts to volunteer and recruit others to volunteer for the many tasks that need doing throughout the year.

Motions and voted upon:

001: John Burke has notified the board that he wishes to resign as a tournament director. The motion, made by Dann and seconded by Franck, was to accept his resignation.

The vote: Six in favor, None opposed, One abstaining [Frymer].

002: There is a need for a Scholastic Chess Coordinator. Valery Frenklakh expressed interest in doing this and has a lot of energy and experience to bring to the effort. The motion, made by Franck and seconded by Lee, was to appoint Valery Frenklakh as Scholastic Chess Coordinator.

The vote: Seven in favor, None opposed.

003: There is an urgent need to fix the dates and locations of MACA-sponsored tournaments for fall, 1999. The motion, made by Driscoll and seconded by Lee, was to hold two tournaments both at the Armenian Culture Center in Watertown on October 9 and 10 and on December 4 and 5.

The vote: Seven in favor, None opposed.

004: There is an urgent need to appoint an editor for Chess Horizons and to stabilize its production and distribution. Peter Sherwood expressed some of the necessary conditions that must prevail in order to ensure reliable Chess Horizon schedules. He also has demonstrated ability to produce this publication. The motion, made by Dann and seconded by Frymer, was to appoint Peter Sherwood, in principle, with the CH budget to be worked at the July board meeting, editor of Chess Horizons.

The vote: Six in favor, None opposed.

The next meeting will be held on Sunday, July 18, in Malden at the VFW Post.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:15pm.
