President, Robert King spoke about our losing about $1000 due to the Enron collapse. He spoke about any investments always involving some measure of risks. The president reports to the board that scholastics are doing very well.
King, Messenger
To approve the Draft 1 minutes of 01-14-02 meeting with the correction of a typo in the Presidents report
Passed: 6-0-1
It was pointed out that the this report does not yet detail the income and expenses for the January qualifier. Peter Lee will be sending the detailed numbers for the qualifier to the Treasurer.
Two donations were received, one for the amount of $ 1,500 from Au Bon Pain for the scholastic State finals and another donation of $250 from Marc Rotenberg to the Living Memorial Chess Fund in memory of Harry Lyman.
Discussion:
10 minutes: 8:08 – 8:18
61 memberships were turned over to the Database Processor.
The Coordinator reported that he has just received a collection of 61 memberships to be entered from Gus Gosselin and is awaiting a collection of about 40 from Peter Lee for the 3rd Qualifier held last week. The database is being improved to allow import and comparisons for memberships that come in USCF ID numbers. A standard very simple template access database will be issued to the scholastics and membership coordinators. The database will have multiple empty tables to be filled in per entry. This approach has several advantages all the way around. The data may be entered into the database in a view that appears just like an excel spreadsheet which is being used by the coordinators now. One particular benefit is that the table may be sorted instantly by simply clicking on the column title with no fear of the data being shuffled. Some custom reports for accounting can easily be made as well as queries that will also look like the tables but with various filtering applied, such as only those who have paid, etc.
Peter Lee reported that he went back and checked past event cross tables against the Maca Database and over half of the kids pre-registered for the third qualifier had problems.
Mark and Peter are actively working on improving the entire registration and reporting process.
Discussion: 10 minutes 8:20 – 8:30
The Mass Game 60 is moving along. Looking to get about 80
Flyers are being distributed.
Mass Open is being organized and the TLA deadline known, March 10th. Will be trying to target attracting lower rated and scholastic players.
A long discussion about accommodating a large scholastic event at the Mass Open equal to the 160 or so at the 3rd qualifier was held.
Gus Gosselin reported that the Danvers 30/30 is being targeted for August.

Messenger, Gosselin 2nd
To Authorize the Tournament Coordinator to design and organize the 2002 Mass Open including scholastics.
Passed: 7-0-2
Discussion: 28 minutes 8:30 – 8:58
All the qualifiers for the state championship cycle have been completed and invitations sent to all the qualifiers for the championships.
March 10th championships in Natick on March 10, the Gus Gosselin Grade championships and the State Finals.
April 7th will be the tournament at Natick High school.
The 3rd Qualifier was held at Milton Academy on
February 3rd
An issue has arising with 9th grade players not being allowed to play in the High School tournament due to the winner being able to attend the Denker. Much debate regarding if we should change the rules that have been published for some time and are the same as last year to accommodate the selection of our champion to the rules of the Denker or to stick to the rules on principal and correct the situation in the future. In particular one strong 9th grader who by his rating is a strong candidate to win the event is by our current rules eliminated from playing in the Denker which allows 9th graders from the rest of the country to participate.
Report and Discussion: 57 minutes 8:58 – 9:55
Motion_2002-02-03
Messenger, Frymer 2nd
For the 2002 scholastic championships to allow 9th graders who qualified for the championships to play in the High School section at their option. Vacancies in the 7th to 9th grade sections will be filled from the February 2002 ratings list. If this results in an odd number of players in the HS section, an additional player from grades 9 through 12 would be qualified to play from the February 2002 rating list.
