MACA Board Meeting Minutes
MACA Board Meeting, March 22, 2009 The meeting was called to order at 2:29 PM. In attendance: F. Alexander Relyea, Kenneth Ballou, Maryanne Reilly, Robert Messenger, George Mirijanian, Donna Alarie, Robert King, Margaret King, and guest Nita Patel. It was noted that there was a correction to the draft of the minutes of the February 10, 2009, meeting that had been circulated for review. MOTION 09-055, Alarie/Reilly, accept the corrected minutes of the February 10, 2009, meeting. PASSED 5-1 (in favor: Relyea, Reilly, Messenger, Alarie, Ballou; against, Robert King; abstaining: Mirijanian, Margaret King). Mr. Stephen Dann arrived at 2:40 PM. Mr. Mirijanian presented the election commission report. The wording of the by-laws requires that we include a printed copy of the summary of by-laws changes in the ballot mailing. Posting the changes on the web site is insufficient notice to the voters. Mr. Messenger presented the treasurer's report. February shows a net loss of $633.84 for the month. The Spiegel Cup lost $290.00. Mr. Messenger presented the membership report (available as an appendix to these minutes). Mr. Ballou presented the tournament committee report. Mr. Walter Champion has offered $1600 to promote the Mass. Open. This money will be used to subsidize a special entry fee and prizes for players under 23 years of age in order to draw students. MOTION 09-056, Ballou/Dann, In appreciation of his substantial generous financial support, Mr. Walter Champion is granted free entry to all MACA tournaments for life. PASSED without dissent. Mr. Dann presented the education and volunteer report. Mr. Dann is shocked by Mr. Kolasinski's resignation from the board. Library program: the education committee has determined that libraries are the best option to promote chess education in MA. The committee should be working toward doing surveys but not spending money to do so (instead using the internet and volunteer labor). Mr. Dann proposes creation of a "Library Challenge" program. Mr. Mirijanian presented the publications report. The April-June, 2009, issue of Chess Horizons was sent to printer Tuesday, March 10. We need to follow up on the status of mailing the issue. President Reilly presented the scholastic committee report. The Spiegel Cup invitational was held Sunday, February 8. The Hurvitz Cup was held Sunday, March 1 at the Sage School and was very well attended. The tournament was held in the newly constructed gymnasium, which proved to be an excellent site that easily accommodated the 220 players. The Gus Gosselin Grade Championship will be held March 29 at Weston Middle School. Owing to a significant irregularity in the high school section, it was decided that the high school section of the tournament held March 1 would not determine the high school state team champion. Instead, a separate tournament to determine the Hurvitz Cup high school state team champion will be held in parallel with the Gus Gosselin Grade Championship at Weston Middle School. President Reilly presented the LMCF report. We are providing ten sets to Robert Armes for the Cornerstone Academy in Northborough and six to Eduardo Valadares for the Hudson Boys and Girls Club. MOTION 09-057, Dann/Robert King, suspend Brian Lafferty as LMCF coordinator and appoint an acting LMCF coordinator. FAILED 1-5 (in favor: Mirijanian; against: Messenger, Reilly, Ballou, Relyea, Robert King; abstain: Dann, Alarie, Margaret King). The next meeting will be held Sunday, April 26, at the Kennedy Senior Center, 117 E. Central Street, Natick, MA, at 1:30 PM. MOTION 09-058, Alarie/Ballou, extend the deadline in motion 09-049 to April 26, 2009. PASSED without dissent. MOTION: 09-059, Ballou/Relyea, adjourn. PASSED without dissent.
