National Master Hal Terrie of Manchester, N.H. was the unexpected winner of the 68th Greater Boston Open, defeating Grandmaster Alexander Kalinin of Brighton in the last round. Hal was down to one second on his clock in an inferior position, but avoided losing on time because of the clock's five second delay feature. Eventually Kalinin also became short on time and blundered during the time scramble, and resigned after making an illegal move which would have given Terrie an additional two minutes on the clock.

12 year old Max Enkin of Peabody also had an excellent tournament, tying for second place by beating International Master Bill Paschall and drawing with FIDE Master Bill Kelleher in the last two rounds. The other second place winners were Kelleher and Ben Goldberg of Attleboro.

There was a total of 65 players in the tournament, which was directed by Bob Messenger with the assistance of Steve Frymer.
