BOSTON YOUTH CHESS CLINIC—APPLICATION

July 9, 2001 through July 12, 2001—Monday through Thursday.

Where: At the Boylston Chess Club, 140 Clarendon Street, YWCA Building 8th floor (it's next to the Hancock building) Boston, MA 02116.

For boys and girls ages 5-16. All levels of play will be taught, from beginners to advanced. Learning chess helps improve reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. The study and playing of chess increases the power of concentration, boosts self-confidence, increases self-esteem, sharpens math skills! (Chess makes you smart.) Chess is a lifetime sport!

Classes will be conducted in three group levels! Levels 1, 2, & 3 (Instructors are masters and veteran scholastic teachers.) Chief instructor will be Life Master Eric J. Godin.

Guest lecturer: Senior Master Jacob Rasin

Times & Levels: Level 1 Strong Beginner 9:30 to 11:30 AM 2 hrs

Level 2 Intermediate 12:30 to 2:30 PM 2 hrs

Level 3 Advanced 2:30 to 4:30 PM 2 hrs

SESSION 1

Level 1: Strong beginner (Student knows the rules, how the pieces move but needs to know how to play the game.) Fundamental tactics; important mating patterns; fundamental endgames; how to attack the King.

SESSION 2

Level 2: Intermediate (Student is familiar with checkmate, stalemate, en passant, and important squares.) Basic opening theory, advanced tactics, endgame theory, more on how to attack the King.

SESSION 3

Level 3: Advanced (Student plays but needs more knowledge.) Sophisticated opening theory, positional concepts, middlegame planning.

Children will get a chance to play and test their newly-acquired skills!

Cost of the four-day program for Level 1 & 2 is $24 (advance registration). Cost of Level 3 is $26.

Cost of registration at the clinic is $4 more.

If you pick the wrong level it can be changed. You can take more than one level.
