Over the past year, MACA has made tremendous progress and there is still much more to accomplish. In my first year as President, we have:

  • Launched the Queen's Blitz Series for Women and Girls under Kateryna Odnorozhenko's leadership, supported by a USCF grant.
  • Introduced NaChessHub to streamline event registration.
  • Negotiated significantly better event hosting rates, enabling greater future investment in the chess community.
  • Expanded the diversity of venues for MACA events.
  • Purchased DGT boards to broadcast games live online.
  • Welcomed new tournament directors to our events.
  • Improved internal communication and workflows by implementing Slack.
  • We are also finalizing an agreement to modernize our website, with an expected rollout in 12-16 weeks.

Looking ahead, I am committed to making more event improvements, introducing new events, strengthening communication with the chess community, and finding new ways to reinvest in our players and tournaments. I thank you all for your support and look forward to another productive year!

Michael Urbonas

It has been a pleasure serving as a Mass Chess board member for the past year. This year I am running for Vice President of MACA and I would be grateful for your vote.

Over the last twelve months, I put my skills in technology, marketing and content creation - and a desire to "get stuff done" - to effective use for MACA, particularly as Acting Webmaster, keeping our current website running while making improvements.

During 2024, we were unable to create new accounts for our legacy web event management application, or maintain existing accounts. Many organizers could not add new events to the website. I resolved this problem by creating an alternative Google-based system to add new events to the website hassle-free, while also presenting a much-improved event list and calendar.

Hopefully you've seen the excellent new Mass Chess logos, color scheme and fonts added to the website, created for MACA by website developer and board member Dustin Hopkins. A major improvement! I carefully implemented these new design elements to the website, making sure to not "break" anything in the process!

I also hope you've enjoyed the new website graphics (and my attempts at humor), such as Paul Revere definitely not having a good game to promote the upcoming Mass Open! This and other interesting content also appears on our Facebook and Instagram accounts, with much more to follow.

Between the above key projects, and too many fixes and tweaks to count, I believe our current website is in good shape as we prepare for a brand new website over the next 12-16 weeks.

Additionally, I also chaired the 2025 Elections Committee and recently began serving as Administrator for the Living Memorial Chess Fund - another fine MACA initiative I intend to expand.

Thank you for your vote!

Dmitry Barash

I'm a Chess Player (2300), Parent of two actively playing Kids, Tutor (teaching kids for 30+ years), and Tournament Director.

I served as the Chair of MACA Scholastic Committee. My main goal is that scholastic tournaments have more participants year by year. And this really works!

I update attendance statistics at: https://sites.google.com/site/scholasticchessinma/all-documents-here-are-related-to-chess-in-ma-mostly-to-scholastic-chess/maca-tournaments-attendance.

Past year we started using the registration site nachesshub.com, which allows you to verify that you are registered correctly and to see who else is registered.

Kateryna Odnorozhenko

I am Kateryna Odnorozhenko, WIM, candidate for MACA director. I've played chess my entire life and was lucky to have studied under Vladimir Savon, 1971 USSR Champion. I have been an active international player, playing tournaments in Ukraine, post-Soviet countries, Europe and the Middle East, with my FIDE rating reaching 2214 at its peak. After becoming a mother and moving to the US, I'm seeking to make my experience work for the Massachusetts chess community. My top priorities are promoting women chess and facilitating clubs and organizers in conducting more events of all levels.

During my 1st year as a MACA director, I focused on girls' and women's chess, running the tournaments that were already on the calendar and, with USChess support, organizing a new series of all-female events, Queens Blitz Series, to provide a regular meeting point for girls and women to learn, play, and make friends.

Elsie Smits

I would like to begin by thanking you all for your support and confidence to be a member of the MACA Board of Directors for the 3rd consecutive year. These years of experience have taught me how things get done, and what we need to keep it an ever growing and improving experience for all. I feel we have had a very productive year. And look forward to continuing the slate of improvements we have planned if you entrust me another year to be one of your Board of Directors.

For those who don't know me: I am a parent, teacher, and chess coach to the Funky Owls Chess Club. In 2017, in support of my daughter's love of chess, I started a chess club dedicated to children due to the lack of children's chess clubs in my area. I have created a fun, and supportive chess environment teaching good sportsmanship and personal growth.

And as always, I will continue to be the eyes and ears on behalf of all members, passing along your feedback, making the case for your interests. Thank you for your support!

Larry Gladding

After graduating from college, I continued my education evenings, achieving membership into Delta Mu Delta, (The International Honor Society in Business Administration), through Nichols College.

In 1972, I took up a serious interest in chess, due to the Fischer-Spassky match. I've been a continuous member of the USCF since 1979, along with being a member of the Wachusett Chess Club at different times since 1976. Several times, I've been a TD for the Wachusett Chess Club. I became a TD in October 1997 and currently hold the title of Senior TD. My aspirations are to become ANTD and a National Arbiter.

I served as a Director on the MACA Board for one year in the past. During the year I saw firsthand the dedication and commitment of the MACA Board members to all chess players, and to keep MACA strong.

I ask for your vote, as I now have the time to make a strong commitment to MACA, to all players and to continue to promote the game of chess.

Please feel free to email me with any questions, ideas, comments, and concerns at lgladding@msn.com.

Colin Scheriff

My name is Colin Scheriff. I'm a chess player and tournament director, and I'm running for MACA Director to help grow the game across Massachusetts and support the organization's long-term success.

I especially enjoy organizing scholastic tournaments and take pride in creating welcoming, well-run events that introduce young players to competitive chess. I've seen the positive impact chess can have on children - including my own daughter - helping them build focus, confidence, and a love of learning. That experience has deepened my commitment to expanding access to chess for kids across the state.

Professionally, I bring decades of experience in corporate finance and strategic planning. I hope to contribute those skills to strengthen MACA's financial foundation and help it reach more players and communities. I care deeply about the future of chess in Massachusetts and would be honored to serve on the board.
