Board of Directors Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, December 7, 2022, 7:30pm
Boylston Chess Club, 35 Kingston St., Boston, MA and via Zoom
ATTENDEES: Andrew Hoy (President), Robert Messenger (Treasurer and Membership Secretary), Jeffrey Caruso (Clerk), and Directors Igor Klempf, Alonzo Ross. Director Dmitry Barash joined later.
CALLED TO ORDER at 7:38 p.m.
1. Minutes
MOTION (AH/AR): to approve the minutes of the October 26, 2022 Board meeting. Passed 5-0.
Mr. Barash joined the meeting.
2. Treasurer’s Report and Membership Report
Mr. Messenger presented the treasurer’s report and membership report (appended), including reports on the Speigel 2nd Qualifier and the Pillsbury Memorial.
Membership for the latest period has declined, possibly due to expirations of new memberships in the 2021 Massachusetts Open, which (unusually) occurred in October of that year.
3. Tournaments
Mr. Messenger discussed upcoming tournaments. The Massachusetts Game/60 Championship will take place April 30. The Senior Open will probably be scheduled for the middle of May 2023 at the Boylston Chess Club. Members of the board explored the possibility of have scholastic sections at next year’s Mass. Open..
4. Scholastics
Mr. Barash reported that dates have been assigned for all scholastic tournaments and we have all contracts in hand.
Spiegel 3rd Qualifier – March 5
Hurvitz Cup – March 26
Girls Qualifier – February 5
Gus Gosselin Grade Championship – January 22
It was strongly suggested that the Winter Team Challenge be sectioned by rating rather than by grade.
6. US Chess Delegates
MOTION (AH/AR): to appoint Robert Messenger and Jeffrey Caruso as Delegates to US Chess for 2023, and to appoint Oleg Poliannikov and Latanya Sweeney as Alternates. Passed 6-0.
It was noted that this still leaves room for one more Delegate (three are allocated to Massachusetts), which will be filled either by a later vote or by one of the Alternates.
5. Next meeting
Unanimous consent motion (AH): the next meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at 7:30pm at the Boylston Chess Club, 35 Kingston St., Boston, MA. Passed without objection.
ADJOURNED at 8:29 p.m.
