MACA Board Meeting Minutes
March 13th 2011

President George Mirijanian called the meeting to order at approximately 3:00 p.m after a mailing session for election ballots. Present were Vice President Steve Frymer, Treasurer Bob Messenger, Clerk Brian Mottershead, and Directors Stephen Dann, Ken Belt, Peter Majahad, and Nicholas Sterling. Director Robert E. King arrived later in the meeting.
The board approved the minutes of the February meeting.
MOTION 0311-1: Move to appoint Larry Eldridge as a Director (Mirijanian). PASSED without dissent.
Mr. Messenger presented the treasurer’s report. There was a loss in February of $1,855.48 in the General Fund but a gain of $4,407.17 overall for the fiscal year, with total fund balances of $52,690.37. The Gus Gosselin Grade Championship, held March 6th in Woburn, had net income of $1,338.70.
Mr. Messenger presented the membership secretary’s report. There were 725 members, 598 people receiving Chess Horizons, and 1059 people with current expiration dates in the database.
Mr. Mottershead presented the scholastic committee report. There were 102 players at the Gus Gosselin Grade Championship. The Hurvitz Cup scholastic team championship was scheduled for April 3rd in Woburn.
MOTION 0311-2: Move to approve the 2011 Hurvitz Cup rules, as posted on the MACA web site (Mirijanian). FAILED.
MOTION 0311-3: Move to reinstate the Hurvitz Cup rules as they were in 2010. (Frymer). FAILED.
Mr. Messenger presented the tournament committee report. The Massachusetts Game/60 Championship was scheduled for April 17th in Leominster and the Massachusetts Open was scheduled for Memorial Day weekend in Marlborough.
Mr. Messenger presented the publications committee report. The January-March issue of Chess Horizons was late but would be sent to the printer soon. (It was sent on March 18th.)
MOTION 0311-4: Move to approve the purchase of a banner to be displayed at MACA tournaments at a cost of up to $200 (Mirijanian/Dann). PASSED as amended.
The next meeting of the MACA board was scheduled for April 16th at the Papa Gino’s restaurant on Route 9 in Natick.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 5:30 p.m.
