MACA Board Meeting Minutes
April 16th 2011

President George Mirijanian called the meeting to order at approximately 2:30 p.m.. Present were Treasurer Bob Messenger, Clerk Brian Mottershead, Directors Stephen Dann, Robert E. King, Larry Eldridge, and Nicholas Sterling, and guest Eduardo Valadares.
The board approved the minutes of the January meeting.
Mr. Messenger presented the treasurer’s report. There was net income of $909.65 in March and $5,316.92 overall for the fiscal year in the General Fund with total fund balances of $53,739.12. The Hurvitz Cup, held April 3rd in Woburn, had net income of $1,455.00.
Mr. Messenger presented the membership secretary’s report. There were 754 members, 617 people receiving Chess Horizons, and 1096 people with current expiration dates in the database.
MOTION 0411-1: Move to nominate Eduardo Valadares to fill a vacancy on the MACA board (Dann). WITHDRAWN.
Mr. Mottershead presented the scholastic committee report. There were 150 players at the Hurvitz Cup. Lexington Junior High School has the Junior High Hurvitz Cup trophy. They say that former MACA presidents Ken Ballou and Maryanne Reilly awarded the trophy to the school in 2009.
MOTION 0411-2: Move to authorize Brian Mottershead to purchase a new Hurvitz Cup Middle School trophy at a cost of up to $200 to be paid out of the Hurvitz Trust. PASSED without dissent.
MOTION 0411-3: Move to name Larry Eldridge as a member of the scholastic committee (Mirijanian). PASSED without dissent.
MOTION 0411-4: Move that the board directs the scholastic committee to revisit the whole issue of grade breaks and eligibility rules for the Hurvitz Cup and make its recommendations to the new board that takes office in May, so that action can be taken during the summer (before the next school year starts) (Eldridge). REFERRED to the scholastic committee on a motion by Messenger.
MOTION 0411-5: Move to update and revamp the Chess Coaches’ listing on the MACA Website (Mirijanian). REFERRED to the scholastic committee on a motion by Messenger.
Mr. Messenger presented the tournament committee report. The Massachusetts Game/60 championship would be held the next day, April 17th, in Leominster. The Massachusestts Open would be held Memorial Day weekend in Marlborough. The Greater Boston Open would be held in October but the date had not yet been chosen.
Mr. Messenger presented the publications committee report. The January-March issue of Chess Horizons was sent to the printer on March 18th, and the April-June issue was also expected to be late.
MOTION 0411-6: Move to appoint George Mirijanian as editor of Chess Horizons (Messenger). PASSED without dissent.
The board then considered new business.
MOTION 0411-7: Move to refer the issue of how much autonomy MACA committees should have to the bylaws committee (Messenger). PASSED.
Mr. Sterling left the meeting.
MOTION 0411-8: Move to authorize the scholastic committee to purchase two Saitek clocks for use in scholastic tournaments (Mottershead). PASSED without dissent.
MOTION 0411-9: Move to give a complimentary MACA membership to Tiffany Wang for as long as she is MACA’s webmaster (Messenger). PASSED without dissent.
MOTION 0411-10: Move to appoint Peter Majahad as club coordinator (Messenger). PASSED without dissent.
MOTION 0411-11: Move to appoint Bob Messenger as the coordinator for the Denker and Barber tournaments (Messenger). PASSED without dissent.
MOTION 0411-12: Move that in the event that Andrew Wang or Grant Xu do not play in the 2011 Denker or Barber tournaments that MACA will pay up to $500 to that player for travel expenses to the next National Scholastic Tournament (Mottershead). FAILED.
MOTION 0411-13: Move to appoint Bob Messenger as assistant clerk (Messenger). PASSED without dissent.
The meeting adjourned at 5:52 p.m.
