MINUTES OF MACA BOARD MEETING – 3/17/2012
Vice-President S. Frymer, acting as President pro tem. on behalf of President G. Mirijanian, called the March Board Meeting to order at 4:21 PM at the Papa Gino’s in Natick. Seven people were in attendance: Vice-President Steven Frymer, Treasurer Robert Messenger, Clerk Nicholas Sterling, and Directors Larry Eldridge, Richard Kinne, Stephen Dann, and Walter Driscoll.
Minutes of the February Board Meeting were distributed by Clerk N. Sterling.
* * MOTION made by R. Messenger to accept the Minutes as distributed. The VOTE was taken; with 4 votes in favor versus 3 abstentions, the MOTION passed. * *
Treasurer’s report was read by R. Messenger:
(i) (1) Net income of the General Fund this period as of 2/29/12: $4704.48 net loss. (2) Net income of the General Fund year-to-date as of 2/29/12: $2659.17 net loss. These two losses reflect the transfer of funds back into the LMCF and Prison Chess Funds voted on last Meeting. (ii) (1) Special Fund income this period as of 2/29/12: $196.45, with $3.00 dividends. (2) Year-to-date Special Fund income: $3493.22, with $419.63 dividends. (iii) (1) Special Fund expenses this period: $3342.00 net revenue.
(2) Year-to-date Special Fund expenses: $2838.18. (iv) (1) Special Fund net income this period: $3538.45. (2) Year-to-date Special Fund net income: $855.04. (v) February 2012 Changes in Fund Balances: This Period: $1166.03 net loss; Year-to-Date: $1804.13 net loss. (vi) Total Assets as of February 2012: $56130.28. (vii) Reserve for Chess Horizons Expenses: $3050. (viii) Gus Gosselin Grade Championship net income: $776.00 (reported later again under Scholastics).
Membership: R. Messenger read the 3/1/12 Membership numbers as follows: Adults 205 (-2); Junior 360 (+16); Life 216 (=); Affiliate 2 (=); Complimentary 4 (+2); D. Library 5 (=); D. Subscriber 10 (=); Exchange 16 (+9); Prison 276 (+1); Subscriber 22 (-1). Total change in Memberships and Subscriptions: +25. (a) S. Dann requested copies of two lists: (i) one of Life Members without e-mail addresses on file with MACA; (ii) one of Members with bad address (counted as 17 on the Membership Report). (b) It was noted that the trend is for adults increasingly not to pay for the hard-copy Chess Horizons.
Scholastic: R. Messenger reported: (i) (1) the Gus Gosselin Grade Championship took in net income of $776.00. (2) R. Messenger is concerned that many parents did not receive the e-mail he tried to send them with the online ap. (3) He recommends that the tournament add a 9th-Grade Section. (ii) (1) An e-mail has been sent out to Members for the Hurvitz Cup. (2) An e-mail has to be sent to the Holiday Inn in Boxboro to confirm the layout. (iii) MACA may wish to add a Fall Team Tournament to the calendar. (iv) It may be advisable to set up a High School League to organize and grow high school teams. (v) * * MOTION (312-1) made by L. Eldridge and seconded by S. Dann to appoint
R. Messenger Chief TD of the Hurvitz Cup Tournament. The VOTE was taken; with 5 votes in favor versus 2 abstentions, the MOTION passed. * *
Tournament: (a) R. Messenger reported: (i) the hotel needs to be decided upon for the NE Open; there is one hotel in NH that may work out; (ii) R. Messenger will do a postcard mailing of the MA G/60 Championship on 4/15. (b) S. Dann asked for more careful oversight from MACA of the booksellers who must be found and contacted to come to tournaments.
Publications: R. Messenger reported that he will aim to publish Chess Horizons by the end of March, but his laptop has still not been fully restored.
Elections: Ballots are to be mailed out by 3/29, according to G. Mirijanian.

New Business: * * ADVANCE MOTION (312-2) made by R. Messenger and seconded by L. Eldridge: “Moved to spend up to $500 each for travel expenses for the Massachusetts representatives at the 2012 Arnold Denker Tournament of High School Champions and the Dewain Barber Tournament of K-8 Champions, to be paid from the General Fund.” The two representatives are James Lung for the Denker and Mika Brittain for the Barber. The VOTE was taken; with 6 votes in favor versus 1 abstention, the MOTION passed. * *
President pro tem. S. Frymer adjourned the March Board Meeting at 6:00 PM. The date, time, and place of the April Meeting are Saturday 4/14/12, at 4:00 PM, at the Papa Gino’s in Natick.
