MACA Board Meeting Minutes
October 19, 2017

Minutes prepared by Bob Messenger
President Nathan Smolensky called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. Present were Vice President John Sadoff, Treasurer Bob Messenger, and Directors Oleg Poliannikov, Larry Gladding, Jeff Caruso, and Steve Frymer. Director Dmitry Barash arrived at 7:05 p.m., Director Paul Arond arrived at 7:37 p.m., and Director Steve Winer arrived at 7:44 p.m.
Membership Secretary Report
Mr. Messenger reported membership totals of 207 adults, 471 juniors, 202 life, for a total of 880 members, plus 5 affiliates, 1 complimentary, 3 library, 23 subscribers, 13 exchange, and 411 prison, for a total of 456 non-members receiving Chess Horizons and a grand total of 1,336 current in the database.
Education Committee Report
Mr. Smolensky reported that the Education Committee was continuing to talk to schools, but there was nothing definite yet to report.
Scholastic Committee Report
Mr. Barash reported that he was in contact with someone who was organizing a scholastic league in western Massachusetts and looking for advice.
Publications Report
Mr. Smolensky said that he planned to publish the next issue of Chess Horizons in November. He is looking for someone to replace him as editor.
Living Memorial Chess Fund Report
Mr. Frymer reported that he had received a donation from Chess Café which included chess sets, and that he would need to buy chess boards to go with the sets.
August Meeting Minutes
No minutes were available for the August board meeting. Mr. Smolensky said he would talk to Clerk Andrew Hoy.
US Chess Federation Delegates
The board voted to appoint Ken Ballou and Bob Messenger as the Massachusetts Delegates for 2018. There were no nominations for Alternate Delegate.
Notice of Proposed Bylaws Change
Bylaws Committee Chair Caruso gave notice of a proposed change to the MACA bylaws: Amend section 7.1, paragraph 1.a. to change the last sentence to read “Members of the Election Commission shall not be candidates for President.”
Appointment of Election Commission
Jeff Caruso was re-appointed as Chair of the Election Commission. Paul Arond and Steve Frymer were appointed as members of the commission.
New Business
MOTION 1017-1 (Smolensky/Messenger) Move to thank Larry Gladding for purchasing lanyards for use at MACA tournaments. PASSED 9-0-1.
The next board meeting was scheduled for November 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the Panera restaurant in Cambridge, Mass.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:47 p.m.
