 MACA Board Meeting Minutes

July 11th2019

President Oleg Poliannikov called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m.  Present were Vice President Steve Winer, Treasurer Bob Messenger and Directors Nathan Smolensky (left 8:00 p.m.), Steve Frymer, and Yi Wang. Jeff Caruso arrived at 7:07 p.m., and Dmitry Barash arrived at 7:11 p.m.

 

MOTION 0719-1:Move to change MACA’s official address to Oleg Poliannikov’s home address (Poliannikov/Messenger). PASSED6-0-0.

 

The board discussed Robb Stewart’s proposal for a formal budgeting process, planning objectives for the fiscal year.

 

MOTION 0719-2: Move to approve the minutes of the June board meeting (Poliannikov/Caruso). PASSED8-0-0.

 

Membership Report

 

Mr. Messenger presented the membership report for July: 192 adults, 443 juniors, 200 life, for a total of 835 members; 2 affiliates, 1 complimentary, 3 library, 24 paid subscribers, 7 exchange, 437 prison, total of 474 non-members, grand total of 1309 in the database.

 

Scholastic Committee Report

 

The board discussed the format of the Spiegel Cup finals and the Spiegel Cup Series. Mr. Wang said that players are in favor of a two day format for the Spiegel Cup finals. Some board members would like to eliminate the Spiegel Cup Series for all sections, others only for Age 14 & Under. One proposal was to impose a minimum rating requirement for players qualifying for the finals from the Spiegel Cup Series.

 

Player Development Committee Report

 

Mr. Winer said he was looking for ideas of what the committee should be working on. Mr. Wang said MACA should run training events with G/90 and slower time controls. Other suggestions included round robin tournaments, GM analysis of games, and simuls. There could also be events geared towards lower rated players. It was suggested that the MACA website could make it easier to find playing opportunities for such players.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 8:58 p.m.
