MINUTES OF MACA BOARD MEETING – 1/22/2012

 

President G. Mirijanian called the January Board Meeting to order at 6:29 PM at the Papa Gino’s in Natick.  Six people were in attendance: President George Mirijanian, Vice-President Steven Frymer (arrived 7:03 PM), Treasurer Robert Messenger, Clerk Nicholas Sterling, and Directors Stephen Dann, Richard Kinne, and Walter Driscoll.

 

Minutes of the November Board Meeting were distributed by Clerk N. Sterling.

* * MOTION made by R. Messenger and seconded by R. Kinne to accept the Minutes as distributed.  The VOTE was taken; with 6 votes in favor versus 1 abstention, the MOTION passed. * *  R. Messenger suggested to N. Sterling that he contact Tiffany Wang to get online access for submitting approved Minutes.

 

Treasurer’s report was read by R. Messenger:

(i) (1) Net income of the General Fund this period as of 12/31/11: $2436.31.

(2) Net income of the General Fund year-to-date as of 12/31/11: $746.04. (ii) (1) Special Fund income this period as of 12/31/11: $2672.78, with $173.01 dividends; a $2350 donation to the Prison Fund explains this high figure. (2) Year-to-date Special Fund income: $3066.05, with $365.23 dividends. (iii) (1) Special Fund expenses this period: $3398.41. (2) Year-to-date Special Fund expenses: $5128.01. (iv) (1) Special Fund net loss this period: $725.63. (2) Year-to-date Special Fund net loss: $2062.03.

(v) December 2011 Changes in Fund Balances: This Period: $1710.68 net gain; Year-to-Date: $1315.99 net loss. (vi) Total Assets as of December 2011: $55424.42.

(vii) Reserve for Chess Horizons Expenses: $1830. (viii) Harry Nelson Pillsbury Memorial net income: $58.53. (ix) 3rd Scholastic Qualifier net income: $504.75. (x) 4th Scholastic Qualifier net income: $589.50.  The small but substantive Tournament profits were noted as a success.

 

Membership: none

 

Scholastic: (i) R. Messenger reported that the Grade Championship is scheduled for 3/11/12, but there is no contract yet. [Clerk’s Note: The Clerk’s record from the Meeting shows a mistaken date of 3/18/12.] (ii) The Spiegel Cup will be held on 2/12/12 in Marlboro. (iii) The Hurvitz Cup concludes the Scholastic season on 4/1/12; again there is no contract yet.  (iv) The 1st Scholastic Qualifier may be held at Buckingham, Brown, and Nichols School in Cambridge in September.  [Clerk’s Note: Both contracts were subsequently signed.]

 

Tournament:              (a) R. Messenger reported: (i) the MA Championship G/60 will be held on 4/15/12 in Marlboro; (ii) the MA Open will be held on Memorial Day weekend for three days in Marlboro; (iii) the New England Open is up in the air because NECA must decide whether to consider a bid submission from MACA or else run the tournament itself.

                                    (b) (i) * * ADVANCE MOTION (112-1a), Item #6 on the Agenda, made by R. Messenger and seconded by S. Dann: “Move to authorize the Tournament Committee to organize the 2012 New England Open, subject to approval of its bid by the New England Chess Association.

                                         (ii) * * AMENDMENT (112-1b) made by R. Kinne and seconded by W. Driscoll: “The Tournament Committee is authorized to offer NECA up to $500 of profit/loss sharing.”

                                         (iii) The VOTES were taken on both the AMENDMENT and the original MOTION; both passed UNANIMOUSLY. * *  It was noted that the deadline for submitting the TLA to Chess Life for the MA G/60 and MA Open is 2/10/12 so that the ad appears in two issues of CL.

 

Publications:                         (a) Nicole Alarie was introduced to the Board as a possible future Editor of Chess Horizons; for now, she will serve as an understudy to the current layout Editor Max Sewell, and may be appointed later once she feels comfortable with the position.

                                    (b) (i) * * ADVANCE MOTION (112-2a), Item #7, second Motion, on the Agenda, made by R. Messenger and seconded by S. Dann: “Move to appoint Nicole Alarie as the editor of Chess Horizons starting with the April-June 2012 issue.”

                                        (ii) * * MOTION (112-2b) made by R. Messenger and seconded by S. Dann to refer Motion 112-2a to the Publications Committee.  The VOTE was taken; the MOTION passed UNANIMOUSLY. * *

                                    (c) * * ADVANCE MOTION (112-3), Item #7, first Motion, on the Agenda, made by R. Messenger and seconded by R. Kinne: “Move to publish the next issue of Chess Horizons as a double issue with a cover date of November 2011 to March 2012, with no adjustment to the expiration dates for members and subscribers.”  The VOTE was taken; the MOTION passed UNANIMOUSLY. * *

 

Election: The proposed slate to date is as follows:

                        President: Robert King

                        Vice-President: Steven Frymer

Treasurer: Robert Messenger

Clerk: Nicholas Sterling

Directors: Stephen Dann, Richard Kinne, Walter Driscoll, and

George Mirijanian

            Other Directors will be contacted.  The deadline for the submission of a new nomination is 2/15/12.

 

LMCF:             (a) S. Frymer gave the 2011 report: (i) There were 18 applications in total. (ii) 204 chess sets in all were distributed, 157 free, 47 paid for, with $262 total revenue.

(iii) LMCF has purchased another 200 sets, boards, and bags for 2012; there were 20-30 left over from before. (iv) Each entity is entitled to receive 10 free sets, and then must pay $6.00/set for every set after the 10th.  There are limits on how many sets each entity may receive in one distribution, even if they are willing to pay.

                        (b) (i) * * MOTION (112-4a) made by S. Dann and seconded by R. Kinne: “Applications to LMCF for chess sets shall be made in writing by a school, library, or local community program administrator, for accounting purposes of MACA.”

                             (ii) * * AMENDMENT (112-4b) made by R. Kinne and seconded by

N. Sterling to add the following words at the end of Motion 112-4a: “and that the application be placed on file with the MACA Treasurer.”

                             (iii) The VOTE was taken on the AMENDED MOTION; the MOTION passed UNANIMOUSLY. * *

 

Education: S. Dann reported that the Boston Chess Education Expo was held in conjunction with CCA's Continental Amateur Tournament on 1/6-1/8/12. (i) G. Mirijanian gave lectures of game annotations. (ii) George Duval gave a lecture related to Chess.com, which offers an ongoing online lecture series for $100/membership. (iii) The next Education Expo is scheduled for 3/3-3/4/12.

 

New Business: In response to a query by S. Dann (responding to a letter he had received) about whether to maintain the SM.A.R.T School listing on the MACA website under Coaches and Camps, two actions were taken: (a) * * MOTION (112-5) made by

R. Kinne and seconded by G. Mirijanian: “Moved that the Education Committee Chairman review the list of chess coaches online to determine the validity of the listing and edit the list so that it is correct and useful; any removals are subject to approval by the MACA Board.”  The VOTE was taken; with five votes in favor, one against, and one abstention, the MOTION passed.  (b) It was agreed to maintain the Camp list (including the SM.A.R.T. school listing) as is; however, the SM.A.R.T. School must be contacted and asked for their instructor’s name, not provided in their letter; it was also agreed to keep both the Coaches list and the Camps list in separate locations online.

 

President G. Mirijanian adjourned the January Board Meeting at 9:03 PM.  The date, time, and place of the February Meeting are Saturday 2/18/12, at 4:00 PM, at the Papa Gino’s in Natick.
