2015-2016 Spiegel Cup Announcement
The Massachusetts Chess Association is proud to announce the 2015-2016 Spiegel Cup season. The top 5 players by the March 2016 rating supplement, winners of the 4 MACA Qualifiers and the player who accumulates the most points in the Spiegel Cup Series will make up the field of 10 players in each age group. This will mark the 3rd year that the Spiegel Cup Series (SCS) will determine the final entrant in the Spiegel Cup Finals. We are very excited for the number of affiliates returning to organize SCS events, including the Waltham Papa Ginos, PerelChess, New England Sports Academy (NESA) Chess and the Fuller Craft Chess Club.
The first SCS event will take place on Sunday (9/20) at the Waltham Papa Ginos. For more information please click here.
The 1st Spiegel Cup Qualifier will take place at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel in Marlborough on October 4, 2015. To register, please click here.
Information about the Spiegel Cup will be updated throughout the year can be found on our State Scholastics page.

MACA Election Candidate Statements
President
Nathan Smolensky (Incumbent)
I have served as MACA president for two years running now, and I am proud to say that some of my wide-eyed ideas for change in the organization have begun to manifest into real progress through the work of the MACA board. The new election system which I pushed forward has cut down countless man-hours and paper waste, and allowed us funds which we can allocate to bettering the Massachusetts chess experience. With the publication of our supplementary guide in the winter, the ambitious Teacher Training Initiative is moving ahead, laying the seeds for a grassroots chess education campaign across the Commonwealth. The Spiegel Cup Series has been a boon for local clubs, creating a symbiosis with our organization that has not been seen in some time. Chess Horizons, under my editorship, continues to evolve in exciting ways. These are the building blocks of a bridge into MACA’s future, and there is much more work to be done. I have been honored to serve as president of this organization these past two years, and hope you will help grant me the boundless opportunities that accompany one more.
Robert E. King (Challenger)
In an e-mail from a member of the Boylston Chess Club, a man wanted to make sure that I ran for the board and he said he would help me. He said I have good ideas, including investing, and he had heard Nathan talk against investing at the club. In the past, MACA's investments did very good while Gus Gosselin was MACA's Investment Coordinator. Regardless of the misunderstood proposal to buy Southern Copper stock on quantity, price per share, and dividends, and the ups and downs of the stock as the mines are in foreign countries because investors got fears of foreign stock after what happened in Cypress: It should not be concluded that all investments are too risky! MACA could have, and still can, invest in municipal bonds as I reported that they are available as shares of mutual funds. Over forty thousand dollars sits at Citizens Bank earning only 0.10% interest, when MACA could get 3.5% interest from the municipal bonds. FEAR stops MACA from investing; AND FEAR stops MACA from taking the risk in running chess tournaments all around the state!! There is the obligation to promote chess where-ever sites and players, especially scholastic players, really do exist!
Dmitry Barash (Incumbent)
I’m chess player (2300), parent (Anton Barash is one of top 8th graders), tutor (teaching kids for 30 years), director, sponsor, member of Scholastic Committee, and Board member. I’m running Chess Scholastic Grand Prix based on Matt Gosselin’s tournaments, and awarded winners for 6 years. You can see more details on my page: https://sites.google.com/site/scholasticchessinma/ After my first year on MACA board I’m glad to see increased interest in scholastic chess, and greater number of kids playing chess.

Steve Frymer (Incumbent)
Steve Frymer has volunteered for MACA for over 45 years. He has held the President, Vice President and Treasurer positions numerous times. Currently he serves as Living Memorial Fund coordinator, Scholastic chair and Prison Chess coordinator.
Paul Arond (Challenger)
I have been an avid tournament chess player, coach, and student of chess history for the past 40 years. Having experienced chess practices in different parts of the country, I am familiar with programs that help foster awareness and growth of chess. In Seattle, I worked for a chess learning center that promoted scholastic chess through classes, coaching, tournaments, and camps. This entailed technical aspects of the game, problem solving, and life skills that can be gleaned through chess. I am interested in maximizing competitive tournament opportunities for players of all levels, and supporting chess in the schools.
Jeff Caruso (Challenger)
I was born in Boston, learned chess here, and grew up competing in MACA-sponsored scholastic tournaments. I love chess and want to see it grow in Massachusetts, and help promote the game and its traditions to the next generation. I will work to foster civility, accountability and leadership in MACA governance. Also, I will draw upon my expertise to further a robust technical infrastructure so MACA can effectively engage its audience.
Stephen Dann (Challenger)
