MACA Elections Candidate Statements
* * * * *
Candidates in the 2023 MACA Election:
The following candidates are on the ballot in the 2023 MACA Election. Registered voters will receive ballots at the beginning of May.
President: Andrew Hoy, Robert E. King
Vice President: Steven Winer
Treasurer: Bob Messenger
Clerk: Jeffrey Caruso
Director: Dima Barash, Frank DelBonis, Robert E. King, Igor Klempf, GM Nadezda Kosintseva, Alonzo Ross, Nicholas Sterling, Elsie Smits, Prof. Latanya Sweeney, Yi Wang
Candidate Statements:
The following candidates have submitted statements in support of their candidacy:
Nadezda Kosintseva, candidate for Director
I am International Chess Grandmaster Nadezda Kosintseva and I apply for the director position in the Massachusetts Chess Association. As a professional chess player, I represented the Russian National Chess Team for more than 20 years and won two chess Olympiad in 2010 and 2012. Since 2017 I reside and work in Massachusetts, teaching kids and adults to play chess. I am dedicated to promoting and popularizing chess in Massachusetts and would like to inspire more girls and women to play chess.
Frank DelBonis, candidate for Director
Please consider me as a candidate for the MACA Board of Directors. Recently, I’ve served as a USCF Senior Tournament Director at every major MACA Tournament. I have over 30+ years of experience organizing and directing over 200+ chess tournaments, and have previously served on the MACA board. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Education from URI, and a Master’s Degree from Brown University. As a teacher and chess coach, I’ve dedicated my life to promoting chess. My expertise and experience will help MACA become a better organization. It would be an honor and privilege to serve you.
Alonzo Ross, candidate for Director
I am a lifelong chess player and a USCF Tournament Director. I have served on the NECA and MACA Boards. Before the Lockdown, I was very active as a TD in the Greater Worcester Chess Club. Now that the Lockdown is over, I plan to resume this role. I also play in a less formal chess group at Panera’s in Shrewsbury. I am thrilled that interest in chess is still growing. MACA is doing an excellent job. We need to continue to encourage kids to play chess and provide excellent Tournaments for all of us.
Igor Klempf, candidate for Director
I am an avid chess player and a parent to three kids who play chess competitively. Me and my kids have been actively participating in MACA chess tournaments for the last 5 years.
Last year I became MACA board director with the intention to help promote chess in Massachusetts. Particularly, I am interested in promoting scholastic tournaments in the state, increase interest and awareness of the game, help establish more kids chess clubs, and increase tournament registration rates, especially among the scholastic population.
Dima Barash, candidate for Director
I’m a Chess Player (2300), Parent of two actively playing Kids, Tutor (teaching kids for 30+ years), and Tournament Director.
I update top by rating for Spiegel Cup and keep some statistics on the attendance of MACA tournaments. You can see details on my page https://sites.google.com/site/scholasticchessinma/
I served as a Head of Scholastic Committee for the first time. Besides the regular duties I added a new tournament in October “Junior Open” and brought many teams and students to scholastic tournaments.
I run unrated tournaments once in two months.
My goal is that more kids will play in Scholastic tournaments.
Steven Winer, candidate for Vice President
I look forward to further growing and supporting chess in Massachusetts.
Jeffrey Caruso, candidate for Clerk
It's a privilege to contribute to Massachusetts chess by being part of the Executive Board. I have worked hard with the board to organize tournaments and other events, and to deliver good governance through diligence, transparency, and service in my roles as Elections Chair and as Clerk.
It is encouraging to see a strong field of candidates again this year. I support our returning Directors and also GM Kosintseva, who is a well-known chess teacher and has coached many teams at the scholastic level.
Please give me your vote so I may continue to work for you!
Robert E. King, candidate for President and for Director
Online chess playing and chess players online have increased. Chess.com membership more than doubled at 60% with a 66% increase in activity since the pandemic, prior to the Netflix miniseries The Queen's Gambit. Unfortunately, cheating in online play and in chess tournaments on the site has increased as well. I have been reporting on cheaters, and all six of them got banned. Many other cheaters got banned from the site, and I got numerous rating point refunds. Be sure to vote in the upcoming MACA election to show your support for my past service for chess and MACA, and so I can lead the organization as President as I have twice before.
